A collection of wartime recipes from my friend Violeta Wolff and her family. Some were written on the backside of calendars, others crammed together on one small sheet of paper. I have picked a few standouts to share.
The first one requires explanation… It is not a recipe for food, but a natural remedy for severe cases of diarrhea, which people in Sarajevo often suffered from during the siege, due to lack of clean running water. The “medication” consists of water, baking soda and salt.
- 1.5 l of water – boil for ten minutes.
- Add 1 Tsp of baking soda and 1 tsp of salt.
Drink for three days – 1 tsp every hour.
- 1.5 l of water
- 1/2 Tsp of yeast
- 1 Tsp of juice powder (?) (probably from humanitarian aid)
- 1.5 Tsp of sugar
Dissolve dry ingredients in a little bit of water, then add the rest of the water. Leave for 3-4 hours or overnight.
- 1/2 kg of bread – use the inside of bread, soak in water and drain
- Add cleaned canned fish
- Add half of onion, minced, garlic and spices : salt, pepper, paprika.
- Boil 400 g of sugar and 1.5 dcl of water to make syrup
- Add 1.5 Tsp of flour and boil again
- Add 100-200 g of milk powder, 3 Tsp of cocoa, 2 dcl of oil and mix well.
Mix 3 Tsp of milk powder, 1 dcl of oil, one small cup of water and 1/2 Tsp of vinegar.
